Sopchoppy History
The city of Sopchoppy is located in Wakulla County just south of Tallahassee, the capital city of Florida. The city is on the Sopchoppy River which connects to the Ochlockonee River which eventually empties into the Gulf of Mexico. It is at the edge of the huge Apalachicola National Forest and the scenic St. Marks Wildlife Refuge. It has a population of about 500 citizens. The name Sopchoppy comes from an old Indian word for river.
Sopchoppy got it's start in 1894 when the railroad came through the area. It was first chartered as a city in 1905 and then chartered a second time in 1955 under Florida House Bill 1523. The city is situated on the east bank of the Sopchoppy River. Combined, these natural resources enhance the quality of life for those fortunate enough to call Sopchoppy home. Saltwater and freshwater fishing, swimming, canoeing, hiking, observing wildlife, water skiing and hunting are some of the activities that are enjoyed by visitors and residents alike.
